Cray Switches On Supercomputer In Japan

Seattle-based supercomputer maker Cray reported today that it has switched on a new system in Japan, at that country's National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). Cray said the observatory has installed a new Cray XC30 supercomputer, solely dedicated to astronomy. Cray did not say how much the install was worth to the company. The NAOJ's new "ATERUI" supercomputer has a peak performance of more than 500 teraflops, and is based at the Mizusawa VLBI Observatory in Iwate, Japan.
