Cray Upgrades Supercomputers To Intel Knight's Landing
Seattle-based Cray said today that it has upgraded its supercomputers to use the new Intel Xeon Phi, "Knights Landing", as well as rolled out a new Lustre storage system to match those systems. According to Cray, the new Intel Phi processors are available in its Cray XC series, which will offer a 2x performance boost compared with the prior generation of those supercomputers. IN addition, Cray said it has launched the Cray Sonexion 3000, scale-out Lustre storage system, which can provide nearly 100 gigabytes per second of performance from a single rack. Pricing on the upgrade systems were not announced. Cray said it already has contracts to install the Intel Xeon Phi versions of its systems into the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), National Nuclear Security Administration; and the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility at Argonne National Laboratory.
