Urban Airship Pulls In $25M Round

Urban Airship, the mobile messaging and push software developer based in Portland, announced today that it has received $25M in a funding round, which it says will go towards doubling its employees this year, and accelerate its roadmap. The startup, led by Scott Kveton, said the round was led by August Capital, and also included Foundry Group, Intel Capital, True Ventures and Verizon. Urban Airship says it already doubled its staff in 2012, saw more than 400 percent year-over-year revenue growth, and now also has offices in Palo Alto and London.

Urban Airship's software is used by developers to handle the task of push notifications on mobile devices, helping to schedule, target, and better utilize those mobile tools to engage users. The firm's services handle those across Apple iOS, Android, Windows 8, Blackberry, and other platforms.

In a blog post, Kveton said the firm actually did not need the funding, but felt that the funding would allow it to take a "massive preemptive strike" to capture the growth rate in smartphone and tablet adoption. Urban Airship says is has 41 job openings at the moment--and also said it's part of a recent surge in Oregon startups, including the large rounds for Janrain and Puppet Labs in the last month, which it means more people are buying into what startups are creating in Oregon. Urban Airship has now raised around $46.6M in funding.
