Cray Wins $188M Contract
Seattle-based supercomputer maker Cray said today that it has inked a huge, $188 million contract, with the University of Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Cray said the supercomputer will include its Cray X36 system and a future upgrade to its Cray XK6 supercomputer, and will be used for scientific computing. Cray's supercomputer is being installed as part of the National Science Foundations' Blue Waters project. The new, multi-year contract will be installed at the University of Illinois National Petascale Computing Facility. The deal is huge: Cray explained that the deal is expected to contribute roughly 40 percent to its annual revenue in 2012.
