Microsoft Buys Github For $7.5 Billion
Microsoft said this morning that it has acquired online source code management services provider Github, in a deal worth $7.5 billion in stock. According to Microsoft, the acquisition will advance Microsoft services with new audiences. Github is widely used by the open source software development community, to allow for the online source code tracking, check in, check out, and other related activities around developing that code. Microsoft said that Github will retain its "developer-first ethos" and will operate independently, saying it will continue to provide an "open platform for all developers in all industries."
