Cray Joins Open High Performance Computing Effort

Seattle-based supercomputer maker Cray said today that it is supporting a new, open software effort looking to standardize the components of high performance computing (HPC). According to Cray, it plans to join the OpenHPC Project, an effort being led by The Linux Foundation, which is looking to help standardize the sooftware stack for high performance computing. The OpenHPC effort looks to abstract out vendor-specific software layers, so that HPC users can run their Linux cluster software on any hardware platform, without extensive development time. Other manufacturers involved in the effort include Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Fujitsu, among others.
