Cray Wins Gulf of Mexico Research Consortium
Supercomputer maker Cray announced its latest supercomputer win today, saying that the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE), in collaboration with the University of Miami Center for Computational Science (CCS), is acquiring one of the Seattle firm's Cray XE6m supercomputers. The supercomputer will be used for hydrocarbon research in the Gulf of Mexico, including tracking oil spills and hydrocarbon pollutants in the GUlf of Mexico. CARTHE is funded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI), a $500M effort started to study the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed.
