NuScale Targets Oil Refining, Desalination With Nuclear Power
Portland-based NuScale Power is eyeing the use of its technology in such applications as oil refining and desalination, the company said today, through what it calls the NuScale Diverse Energy Platform (NuDEP). NuScale said its small, modular nuclear reactor technology has been used in a number of studies, applied to oil refineries, tied to renewable wind power, for hydrogen production, and desalination. NuScale says the use of its technology can help meet "clean energy, clean air and clean water goals" for the nation. The company has been looking to have its systems submitted for certification by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by 2016.
