Portland On New Google Fiber List
Portland--along with suburbs Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham, Lake Oswego, and Tigard--is on a new list of new cities that potentially might get deployment of Google's high speed, 1,000 Mbps fiber service, according to an announcement by Google Wednesday. Google released a list of 35 cities who may potentially be selected for the high speed fiber service, part of an effort the Internet giant has been making to pare down a list of over a thousand cities who were courting the company for deployment of the ultra-high speed network. Google has been experimenting with ultra-fast access across the country with the service, which is about 100 times faster than a typical broadband connection today. Google only offers the service now in Kansas City, Kansas; Austin, Texas; and Provo, Utah.
