Amazon Web Services Takes On Virtual Desktops, Application Streaming
Seattle-based Amazon Web Services, the cloud services arm of Amazon.com, said today that it has launched two new services--a virtual desktop service for corporations, and an application streaming service for developers. According to Amazon, its new Amazon WorkSpaces service provides fully managed, desktop computing services in the cloud for companies, to allow them to provision cloud-based desktops to end-users; Amazon said the offering will be less than half the cost of typical virtual desktops. Separately, Amazon launched Amazon AppStream, a service for developers to help them more easily stream resource-intensive applications--such as 3D games and HD applications--from the cloud.
