App Camp For Girls Plans To Inspire Female Software Developers
A new, nonprofit organization based in Portland, App Camp for Girls, said today that it has surpassed its goal of raising $50,000 on crowdfunding site Indiegogo, and will launch a trial "beta" camp on June 24th. The nonprofit has now raised over $65,000 for its efforts to create a way for girls to learn about designing and building apps--and helping to tip the scale of gender imbalance among software developers.
The nonprofit said it is looking to help young girls, ages 12-14, learn how to build their own apps from the ground up. The group is also hoping to roll out its efforts nationwide, starting with Portland, and later rolling out its camp in summer of 2014 to other cities.
