Microsoft, Nikon Sign Android Patent Deal
Redmond-based Microsoft has roped in another maker of Android hardware to its licensing program, the firm said Thursday--Nikon. MIcrosoft and Nikon said the patent licensing agreement provides "broad coverage" under Microsoft's patent portfolio for certain Nikon cameras running the Android platform. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Microsoft said that it will receive royalties from Nikon as part of the agreement. The deal is the latest scored by Microsoft in the controversial area of Android software--developed by rival Google. Microsoft has managed to convince a significant number of hardware manufacturers to pay it some royalties for patent coverage on use of Android--which it says incorpoartes some of its patented technology.
