Amazon Web Services Takes On Low Cost Storage With Glacier
Amazon Web Services, the web services arm of Amazon.com, announced this morning that it has launched a new cloud service, aimed at providing "extremely low cost" storage. The new service, Amazon Glacier, is aimed at providing low cost, secure, archive storage. Amazon explained that its new storage service is aimed at data that is infrequently accessed, but still important, particularly data archiving and backup. Amazon said the new service will offer up storage for as little as $0.01/GB/month. The new cloud service is directly aimed at replacing the use of tape storage for archiving, Amazon said in explaining its new service.
