Amazon Launches Its Own DNS Service
Seattle-based Amazon Web Services expanded its suite of web services over the weekend, saying that it has launched its own, DNS (Domain Name System) service called Amazon Route 53. According to Amazon, the new DNS web service is aimed at developers and businesses, giving a "highly avalable and reliable" way to route Internet traffic to web applications. Amazon said the new service will results in low DNS query latency for end users, and uses a network of DNS servers to provide high availability. Amazon is one of a number of companies--including Google--which run alternative DNS services, which replace existing DNS service providers with faster and more reliable DNS lookups. DNS is the system used to translate English URLs to IP addresses on the Internet.
