Uber's Greyball Deliberately Deceived Portland Officials, Says Report
Ridesharing service Uber deliberately created a software program, called "Greyball", in order to deceive Portland, Oregon officials looking to gather evidence that the company was operating illegally in the city, according to the New York Times. The Times said the software, which attempted to detect--based on credit card histories and social media profiles--who might be working for the government, and would then stymie their attempts to get a ride on the service. The Times said the software first surfaced in 2014, specifically to throw off Portland officials posing as regular customers.
