Amazon Dodges Sandy
The data centers for Amazon Web Services have emerged unscathed by Hurricane Sandy, after the storm's path took it away from Amazon's Virginia operations. Although there was significant impact of Sandy on nearby data centers in New York, Amazon reported that the service continued to operate normally in the storm. Amazon had made preparations for Sandy in the form of generator fuel, food/water, flashlights, radios, and extra staff. Amazon's US East Region cloud services run out of Northern Virginia, and the location has previously been impacted by stormy weather. Those cloud services power a large chunk of the Internet's web services.
