PopCap Chops 50, Mostly In Seattle

Seattle-based PopCap Games, the casual gaming studio now owned by Electronic Arts, said today in a blog post< that it is laying off a significant number of people, mostly at its headquarters in Seattle. The firm is reportedly laying off 50 people across North America. The company also said it was in "exploratory consultation" about the future of PopCap's operations in Dublin. In the blog post, co-founder John Vechey said the move came as a result of a shift in the market, as "free-to-play, social and mobile games have exploded in popularity." The company said those changes are requiring PopCap to reorganize its business and invest in new types of games on new platforms.
