Amazon Launches Storage Services For Developers

Seattle-based Amazon has launched a new, data storage service for software developers. The firm said this morning that Amazon S3 will provide low latency, storage infrastructure based on Web Services technology, that allows developers the ability to store any amount of data from anywhere on the web. The new service from Amazon supports storage of data based on objects that can be anywhere from 1 byte to 5 gigabytes of data, and can be retrieved via a unique developer-assigned key. The object-based storage system is what Amazon uses for its own internal servers. Amazon said that they will charge developers $0.15 per gigabyte of storage per month, and $0.20 per gigabyte of data transferred to and from the service.
