Cheers Gains $2.5M To Spread Happiness, Joy
Is the world short in happiness and joy--and how can a mobile app change that? Los Angeles-based Cheers, the new startup from Bizrate founder Farhad Mohit, disclosed Tuesday afternoon that it has raised $2.5M in a Series A from investors to help build out its mobile apps, which let users show their appreciation for people, things, and places they love. MomentFeed Signs Long List of High Profile Customers
Santa Monica-based location analytics software developer MomentFeed announced Tuesday morning that it has signed on some big brands as customers of the firm. According to MomentFeed, 7-Eleven, JCPenney, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, and The Home Depot have all selected the company's platform to power their social marketing efforts at the local level. Carolus Therapeutics Gets $2.25M In Debt Funding
San Diego-based Carolus Therapeutics, a developer of biopharmaceuticals aimed at treating acute and chronic inflammation, has scored $2.25M in a debt funding round, according to financing provider Square 1 Bank. According to Square 1, the new funding will go support future growth at Carolus. Carolus Therapeutics is venture backed by Avalon Ventures, and is headed by Court Turner, who is both CEO of Carolus and a venture partner at Avalon. Xfire Launches PC Tournament Service, Battleground
Santa Monica-based Xfire is aiming to make it easier for PC game enthusiasts to find challengers, with the launch of a new tournament system, the firm announced this morning. Xfire said Battleground is a fully automated, competitive gaming platform which lets gamers challenge their friends and foes, participate in tournaments, or organize their own, private PC gaming tournaments. Twitter Shuts TweetDeck
So long, third party Twitter apps? Those in the Southern California high tech ecosystem might remember the bidding battle that Pasadena-based Ubermedia had with Twitter over Twitter client software firm Tweetdeck a couple of years ago. For awhile, it looked like Ubermedia had acquired the popular Twitter client for around $30M--only to have Twitter trump those efforts and ultimately acquired Tweetdeck in May of 2011.

FindTheBest Lands $11M For Comparison Engine

FindTheBest, the online comparison and research site headed by former DoubleClick founder Kevin O'Connor, said this morning that it has raised $11M in a Series B funding round. The round was led by New World Ventures, and also included Montgomery & Co., Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, an dothers. According to the company, the new funds will go to enter new market segments, to expand internationally, and build out monetization of its platform.

Quorum Gets $11M From Former Quest CEO Vinny Smith's New Venture Firm
There's a new venture investor in town, thanks to Dell. Vinny Smith, the former CEO of Aliso Viejo-based Quest Software, appears to have become one of the most active investors in recent months in enterprise software, after starting up a new venture capital firm, Toba Capital. The latest investment from Toba is in backup, recovery, and business continuity appliance provider Quorum, based in San Jose, which reported an $11M Series B funding this morning from Toba Capital and Airtek Capital Group. DecisionPoint Systems Gets $10M In Line Of Credit From SVB
Irvine-based DecisionPoint Systems, which provides integration of enterprise mobility and wireless applications, announced this morning that it has received $10M in a line of credit. The credit line comes from Silicon Valley Bank. Terms of the new line of credit were not disclosed, however, DecisionPoint Systems said the new line of credit has improved terms than an earlier, line of credit.

DTS Gets Win In India
Calabasas-based audio technology provider DTS reports this morning that it has signed a customer in India for its surround sound technology. DTS said that Spice Mobiles, a mobile handset brand in India, will use its DTS Sound technology in its latest smartphones. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. DTS said its technology will begin shipping in Spice Mobiles' smartphones in May.

Kurion Signs Partner
Irvine-based nuclear waste management technology provider Kurion said today that it has signed on a new partner, Perma-Fix Environmental Services, a provider of nuclear and mixed waste management. Kurion said that Perma-Fix will deploy its GeoMelt In-Container Vitrification technology, in such areas as nuclear power plants, and other nuclear waste streams.
